I <3 THE 80s??

My versions of 80s cartoons continue! I've asked most of my friends, and I'm convinced that Katie Rice is the only person besides myself who remembers this show... Here's my drawing of Maya the Bee!!

Maya was a children's anime show from Japan, and while it was originally produced in the mid-70s, it aired on Nick Jr. in the mid-late 80s and that's when I watched it. I remember it being SUPER cute!!

It was about this little girl bee named Maya and her adventures in the forest with her best pal Willie. They also had a grasshopper friend and some other supporting characters but the last time I saw this show was when I was 5, maybe 6, so the memories are a bit fuzzy!

Well hopefully my drawing gives justice to the show's cute factor. Here's the ink I did, pre-color/textures.

My takes on 80s cartoons continues soon, so keep checking back here!!

I love it, I think yours looks even cuter than the original. I've never heard of this show before, so I've learned something new!!!

Being born in the late 80's I'm more of a 90's child myself, which is a shame because the 90's are still old enough to be lame, but not old enough to be cool again. =(

Though, I think it's without question that the 80's will always be cooler than the 90's.

Niki- Heard of it, but never saw it!

Shawn- Thanks!

Tinker- Thanks! Whoa, deja vu comment.

Jenny- I mean when you get right down to it, both decades have their fair share of lameness. But at least the 80s was lame with style. ;)

Hey Nico, I remember this one! it was very commonly aired here in Israel. Your drawings are much more appealing and entertaining than the original :)

Nice drawing, Nico! Very cartoony! I actually like that early 70s-80 Christian anime, like The Flying House and Superbook.

I just wanted to take this time to apologize for lashing out at you earlier. I have a problem with saying things without thinking them, without any or all regard to the fucking consequences or repurcussions. Motherfucker, I'm doing it again.

Dude, that was my favourite show! Sadly nobody seems to remember it. I even still have it's amazing theme song memorized!

Amir- Haha that's awesome. Thanks buddy!

Jorge- thanks! and no prob. ;) Just don't let it happen again. :P

Patrick- I wish the show was available somehow, I'd just be interested to see it because it'd be such a blast from my pre-poobescent past. The theme song is on youtube but that's it...

I don't know this one because -gasp- we didn't have cable! I do know that your take on it is better than the original.

I DEFINITELY remember Maya the Bee, but I don't remember liking her. Then again, I was a good deal older than five when I saw it.

Though, if she had been drawn the way you did here, I probably would've paid the show more mind. I REALLY love the Inspector Gadget. Can you do one of the Bakshi's Mighty Mouse characters, or Chuck Jones' Alvin and the Chipmunks?

I personally hope you never stop. If everyone were rational and cool-headed, they wouldn't have anything to talk about on chat shows.

- trevor.

PS: I'd like to see more of yer roughs, BTW Nico.

I dont remember this show at all. Like no clue!

I remember Teddy Ruxbin and various other bad childrens shows... but not this. Wow. Did I lose a chunk of my brain?

I did love Samurai Pizza Cats!

Great drawing and you deserve a reward for stumping me on this mystery of a tv show!

You made it look cute though!

Hey Nico,

Fantastic stuff here. Tons of appeal, nothing flat or boring, and I have to say the inspector gadget post a few posts back is fucking awesome man.
