THE 80s ARE BACK??

I don't know if it's the same where you live, but when Kali and I go shopping together here in L.A. these are the kind of outfits that we see lately. The plain and simple truth is that the 80's are BACK!!!

It's so insane to be seeing VIBRANT, BRIGHT COLORS considered hip and stylish now. Remember when ZERO color and hip-hop clothes were in? Yeah, it was only a few years ago! So with this new trend of the decade I'M from, I thought it'd be fun to draw up my versions of some of my favorite animated shows I grew up with in the 1980s. Look for my next couple of posts to feature them!

Here's my first shot at one of my favorites: INSPECTOR GADGET

Despite a lot of limited animation and poor budget, I just like these characters a lot. Penny and Brain were always so cute! For those interested, here's what my crappy roughs and ideas look like before I scan them in and do the computer/tablet thing.

And here's just the ink, before background, colors and textures.

My takes on 80s cartoons continues next post, so stay tuned!

I'm not really into Inspector Who-hah, but your drawing is great!

Amazed!!!! This is great, and I can barely wait for the next installment.

I agree with Kali, the Inspector Gadget drawing is awesome.

On a related note, once at work I drew a parody of Inspector Gadget named Infested Gadgets.

I'll let your imagination wander on that one, and yes I got pulled into the manager's office for that.

I use to love that show. I love the drawing. Can't wait to see more. I have a soft spot for 80's TV and music, but not the clothes really.

Haha the Inspector Gadget movie pissed me off so bad. I hate when they make live action movies outta cartoons.

Awesome rendition, btw! I'm loving the inkwork, very refined. Haha shoulda drawn Penny tied up or something since like every episode she was nabbed by the bad guys lol.

Ugh...the 80's! Yeah, the 80's made a comeback, much to my dismay. I always thought everything from the 80's was ugly. I'm proof of that!

Though I did watch Inspector "Who-hah" when I was a kid. Not sure if I'd like it today, but I think it's cool that Don Adams (Maxwell Smart) did the voice.

Great drawing btw! Can't wait to see what's next! QBert?

This is the worst trend I've ever seen in my entire life. I was hoping this would be dying off soon, and that "Mad Men" would influence people to dress more like the 50s and 60s, in more neutral colours. It`s like I`m living in Rainbow Brite land over here. The fucking hipster leeches from Toronto invade my city to get a degree in film studies at my fucking school. I want to shatter their world views with my clenched fists.

But as Dennis Miller used to say on Weekend Update in the 80s, that`s just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Alright, I just had to say it:
"It's the 80s! Do a lot of coke and vote for Ronald Reagan!"

*cough, cough* Er-herm...I'll go sit back in my corner now...

Nice drawing, looks way better than the show. Even as a kid I knew Gadget was a Get Smart rip-off.

I like the rough drawing dude, more of them please!

I think David's right, I was hoping that someone else would say that. It's probably safer to say that it never left my hometown...

And Zach, did you hear they're making a live action movie of 'Ren & Stimpy'.
Bwaa haha, sorry can't keep a straight face for that one.

I loved Inspector Gadget as a kid! I watched him religiously, every single day at noon-thirty!

Inspector Gadget's theme song kicks serious heiny.

Thanks everyone!!!! Check for my next 80s cartoon post tomorrow!

Tinker- Yeah, I've got this serious soft-spot nostalgia for the 80s, even though everything from it is really not all that good. I can't explain it really!

Zach- The Gadget movie is the perfect example of taking something and making it absolutely nothing. My life died a little that day. Ok, thanks for watching another installment of "Nico Presents: I Hate Movies!"

Jorge- Hahaha, I bet 1 in 1 of those hipster film students wear either slender black jeans, glasses frames that are way too thick for their own good, or t-shirt vest and scarf combo. Wait a minute... (looks at himself) ..Ok looks like I'll be enrolling in your school this fall. See ya then, Jorge!

Gemmill- Ew, the 90s. Now THAT'S a decade I don't want to re-live. It's just the 80s but 10 times lamer. BOOYA

Don't get me wrong, I still watched every episode of Gadget because of the theme song and Dr. Claw. The 80's were all about Dic.

COOL! I can't wait to see your take on other 80's cartoons. (do count Duckula)

I have the Inspector Gadget theme song stuck in my head.

Shawn- Don Adams kicks ASS! Remind me to do my voice impression of him next time I see you.

Marc- I KNOW, right?? I listen to it in the car sometimes!

Thanks Kwisten!!! Thanks everyone

Awesome drawing!! You should definatly do more 80's cartoon remakes..maybe The Raccoons? Oh and if the 80's are back they HAVE to bring back female shoulder pads..

Jack G. said...

Oh Nooooo!

Having lived through the 80's once was enough.

I don't see any high-tops in that shot.
No tight jeans by Calvin Klein or Jordache, Sasson, or Guess.

I really hope big hair doesn't come back.
A gal at my high school went to light up a cigarette a torched her hair. Too much hairspray.

Your versions of 80's cartoons are better than the real thing.
